The area in which Orcia wine is produced is considered the most beautiful countryside in the world: as is widely known, in 2004, UNESCO included it in the list of World Heritage Sites, making it the first rural area to receive this recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The entire area in which Orcia wine is produced is characterised by beautiful scenery, ranging from the lunar landscape of the Crete Senesi to the rolling hills with lines of cypress trees, castles, abbeys, farms and the medieval villages of the Val d’Orcia. Grain fields dominate the landscape, alternating with pastures, centuries-old olive trees and, of course, vineyards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long history of wine in the Val d’Orcia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Today, the twelve Orcia DOC municipalities are among the most exclusive tourist destinations, which is also thanks to the area\u2019s food and wine. According to several studies, the Etruscans, and later the Romans, already knew, appreciated and consumed the grapes of the Val d’Orcia, a land where vine cultivation dates back thousands of years. In recent decades, this production has undergone major growth, with a focus on wine-making, partly in the wake of what has happened in Montalcino with Brunello and in Montepulciano with Nobile, both grown in neighbouring lands just a few kilometres away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The designation guarantees quality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Recognition of the Orcia DOC Controlled Designation of Origin has therefore confirmed the quality of this wine, which has reached levels of absolute excellence in just a few years. It is significant that the designation was established on St Valentine\u2019s Day 2000, thanks to the tenacity of several producers, the founders of the Consorzio Vino Orcia, driven by the love for their work. In addition to the noble Sangiovese grape variety, which is the common thread running through the entire wine production in southern Siena, representing at least 60% of the grapes used, international grape varieties are also permitted for the red wine: this blend makes it possible to satisfy the modern palate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production network<\/strong>
Over the years, the number of wineries operating within the designation has also grown, confirming the validity of the product and the vitality of the sector, producing wines with a distinct personality and making them particularly recognisable. In addition to Pienza, the designation includes eleven Municipalities: Buonconvento, Castiglione d’Orcia, Radicofani, San Quirico d’Orcia and Trequanda. It also includes parts of the territories of Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena. The ros\u00e9, white and Vin Santo wines have also obtained DOC certification.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Orcia DOC, protagonist of events<\/strong>
Orcia DOC wines are available for sale starting in March, following the harvest, except for the most prestigious reds, Riserva and Sangiovese Riserva, which must age for 24 and 30 months, respectively, of which 12 or 24 months in wooden barrels; Vin Santo dessert wine has to age for at least 3 years. Every year in spring, the Consortium organises the Orcia Wine Festival, an event dedicated to wine and to the territory, and it is the premier event in an intense programme of cultural activities. In winter, it organises DiVinOrcia, which, since 2024, has been offering a preview of the new vintages available for sale. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orcia DOC in numbers<\/strong>
As of today, there are 153 hectares of declared vineyards, out of a potential 400 hectares in total. Average annual production stands at around 255,631 bottles, produced by approximately 60 wineries in the area, over 30 of which are members of the Protection Consortium that, since 2014, has been responsible for the supervision and erga omnes<\/em> promotion of all producers of the designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasting Val d’Orcia wines<\/strong>
Orcia DOC red wine has an immediate intense ruby \u200b\u200bcolour (in young wines) tending towards garnet (in older wines). It expresses aromas of ripe red fruits, cherry, plum, violet and often elegant spicy notes (tobacco, pepper, leather). To the palate, it is generally dry, warm and smooth, with clear yet integrated tannins and a freshness typical of Sangiovese wine. The balance between acidity, alcohol content and structure is key; the wine has a persistent conclusion with a pleasant fruity or spicy aftertaste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food and wine combinations<\/strong>
Thanks to its structure and complexity, Orcia DOC wine is a great match with numerous traditional Tuscan dishes, such as pici<\/em> pasta with Cinta Senese meat sauce, pappardelle<\/em> pasta with wild boar or tagliolini<\/em> pasta with white truffle from the Crete Senesi area. It is naturally ideal with grilled red meats, roast pork or lamb, braised meats and game.
