{"id":3251,"date":"2025-11-04T10:58:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T09:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portalepienza.readydigital.it\/senza-categoria\/torre-del-cassero-e-cinta-muraria-di-monticchiello\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T23:34:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:34:49","slug":"monticchiello-and-the-keep-historical-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portalepienza.readydigital.it\/en\/discover-pienza\/monuments\/monticchiello-and-the-keep-historical-profile\/","title":{"rendered":"Monticchiello and the Keep: Historical Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first historical record of Monticchiello dates back to <strong>973<\/strong>, when it appears in the list of castles and courts given up by <strong>Lamberto<\/strong> Aldobrandeschi, son of Marquis Ildebrando, to the priest <strong>Ropprando<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Until the <strong>13th century<\/strong>, the history of this important castle &#8211; site of the Baptismal Church of <strong>San Leonardo<\/strong> &#8211; remains largely obscure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1156<\/strong>, Count <strong>Paltonieri di Fonteguerra<\/strong> donated the castle to <strong>Pope Adrian IV<\/strong>, who later returned it to the count as a benefice. Later on, the castle seems to have passed from the <strong>Apostolic See<\/strong> to the <strong>Order of the Teutonic Knights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>1259<\/strong>, the <strong>Republic of Siena<\/strong> decreed the strengthening of Monticchiello\u2019s defences, ordering the construction of a <strong>fortified fortress<\/strong>. In <strong>1271<\/strong>, the <em>Consiglio della Campana<\/em> (Council of the Bell) resolved to send a <strong><em>giusdicente<\/em><\/strong> (judicial official) under the authority of the Podest\u00e0 of Siena, confirming the strategic importance of the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1283<\/strong>, during tensions with Montepulciano, the <strong>Ghibellini exiles from Siena<\/strong>, after occupying Montefollonico, also demanded Monticchiello\u2019s surrender. In <strong>1233<\/strong>, the castle\u2019s consuls had already sworn loyalty and alliance to the Podest\u00e0 of Siena, confirming the village\u2019s permanent position within the Sienese sphere of influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around <strong>1350<\/strong>, the main tower took on its current appearance, visibly <strong>leaning<\/strong>, probably due to land subsidence or telluric movements. Documentation provides evidence of inspections and consolidation work ordered by the <strong>Republic di Siena<\/strong>, a sign that the building was deemed essential for the defence of the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1502<\/strong>, the castle was conquered by the troops of <strong>Cesare Borgia<\/strong>, known as Valentino (The Valencian), and the garrison was massacred. Monticchiello then played a leading role during the <strong>Sienese war<\/strong>, finally falling to the assault of imperial forces in <strong>1553<\/strong> after long and tenacious resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Keep, the walls and the system of defence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Keep<\/strong> is all that remains of the original castle and the complex system of defence that surrounded Monticchiello. Built in the second half of the <strong>13th century<\/strong> under the influence of the Republic of Siena, it served as a <strong>fortress<\/strong> and a strategic garrison, in a dominant position over the Val d&#8217;Orcia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tower of the Sienese Keep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Tower of the Keep<\/strong> is the most imposing element still visible: this massive structure that dominates the village was the centre of the system of defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong>: around <strong>1260<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct connection to the village\u2019s boundary walls and watchtowers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highest and most fortified part of the entire complex<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monticchiello still retains a large part of its <strong>medieval boundary walls<\/strong>, with several integrated towers. Many of these are now <strong>privately owned<\/strong>, as was the tower of the Keep until <strong>2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Middle Ages, Monticchiello was a <strong>key defensive stronghold<\/strong> for the Republic of Siena in the Val d&#8217;Orcia, especially during the conflicts with <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> and in the disputes between <strong>Siena e Florence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The original layout of the Keep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Important evidence of the overall layout of the Keep at its peak of development is provided by the <strong>sixteenth-century survey by engineer Jacopo Fusti Castriotto<\/strong>.<br>The drawing shows a <strong>square-plan<\/strong> defensive complex with <strong>four towers<\/strong> in the corners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One inside the village and three built on the walls, at regular intervals. On the summit plateau of the hill, inside the ancient castle, the <strong>ruins<\/strong> of what may be the collapsed remains of the three bastions and sections of the outermost walls are still visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20th-century restoration and public restitution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>1960s<\/strong>, the Tower of the Keep became the private property of Finnish sculptor <strong>Heila Hiltunen<\/strong>, who turned it into a holiday <strong>residence and workshop<\/strong>.<br>The renovation, conducted under the supervision of the <strong>Superintendence of Siena<\/strong>, is documented in a <strong>1970<\/strong> project and has given the tower a residential structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The addition of two <strong>intermediate floors<\/strong> made of metal beams and brick;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The construction of plasterboard <strong>partitions<\/strong> on the top floor;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>internal wooden stairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The wall damage was treated with <strong>cement mortar<\/strong>; the monitoring slides installed did not detect any further movements, indicating <strong>structural stability<\/strong>.<br>The missing corners were reconstructed in <strong>reinforced concrete<\/strong>, a deliberately recognisable and philologically legible choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>July 2019<\/strong>, the tower was acquired by the <strong>State Property Administration<\/strong>, thanks to joint intervention by <strong>MiBAC<\/strong> (Ministry of Culture) and the <strong>Superintendence<\/strong>, thus returning it to <strong>public ownership<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Keep today<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Keep complex and the <strong>surrounding park<\/strong> (about <strong>one hectare<\/strong>) occupy the highest and most panoramic part of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The Keep of Monticchiello is a <strong>symbol of identity<\/strong> for the local community, a true <em>\u201cstone giant\u201d<\/em> that has contributed to the formation of the village\u2019s collective consciousness. It is, at the same time, a monument of great value as an example of <strong>military architecture<\/strong> and also for its extraordinary <strong>visual relationship with the Val d\u2019Orcia landscape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>walls<\/strong> and the Keep area can be visited externally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Special openings of the park of the Keep<\/strong> are planned and organised by the Superintendence of Siena<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A recovery project financed by the <strong>Tuscany Region<\/strong> has made the entire <strong>patrol route<\/strong> around the walls accessible and lighting has been added, with views of the Val d\u2019Orcia and towards Montepulciano, as far as the Tower of the Keep: This itinerary was inaugurated on 31 July 2022 with the participation of the President of the Region and the Superintendence of
