{"id":3321,"date":"2025-11-04T09:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T08:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portalepienza.readydigital.it\/senza-categoria\/duomo-di-santa-maria-assunta\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:48:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T11:48:42","slug":"duomo-di-santa-maria-assunta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portalepienza.readydigital.it\/en\/discover-pienza\/monuments\/duomo-di-santa-maria-assunta\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Cathedral of Pienza<\/strong>, commissioned by <strong><em>Pius II<\/em><\/strong> and built between 1459 and 1462, is one of the monuments that best represents the Italian Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Progettato da <em>Bernardo Rossellino<\/em>, riflette le idee di <em>Leon Battista Alberti<\/em> e le suggestioni delle <em>Hallenkirchen tedesche<\/em>, conosciute dal pontefice durante i suoi soggiorni in Germania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0It was designed by <strong>Bernardo Rossellino<\/strong> and reflects the ideas of <strong>Leon Battista Alberti<\/strong> and the influence of the <strong>German <em>Hallenkirchen<\/em><\/strong> (Hall Churches), which the pontiff encountered during his stays in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>travertine fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> is divided by pilasters and organised into two tiers; the aedicules and the large oculus in the upper section characterise this splendid architecture and refer to the typical elements of a classical temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, there are <strong>three naves, equal in height<\/strong> and lit up by large windows, creating a bright environment, which Pius II described in his Commentaries as a <strong>\u201cdomus vitrea\u201d<\/strong> (house of glass).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire structure is a summary of the pope\u2019s humanist project: to unite the purity of classical antiquity with Christian ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church has five chapels: three in the apse and two in the arms of the crossing. The altars contain altarpieces commissioned to important Sienese painters: Sano di Pietro and Giovanni di Paolo, still linked to Late Gothic style, and Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta, and Matteo di Giovanni, who were closer to Renaissance style. These works are among the first examples of Renaissance altarpieces with frames inspired by classical buildings but still painted on a gold background, bringing to mind the metaphysics of light sought by Pope Pius II in the construction of the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the altarpieces portray the <em>Virgin and Child<\/em>, except one dedicated to the Assumption, which is inextricably linked to the name of the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour of the cathedral starts in the right aisle, with the Altarpiece of St Anthony by <em>Giovanni di Paolo<\/em>. The <em>Virgin Mary<\/em> is kneeling before the Child lying on her lap, surrounded by angels forming an imaginary throne. On the sides, you can see Saint Anthony the Abbot, Saint Francis with the stigmata, Saint Bernardino with his monogram and Saint Sabina with the martyr\u2019s palm. The lunette portrays a dramatic <em>Lamentation over the Dead Christ<\/em>, rendered with strong emotional intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next is the Altarpiece of St Matthew by <em>Matteo di Giovanni<\/em>, the youngest of the painters chosen by Pius II. Here, the artist fully embraces the new Renaissance elements: the Virgin Mary sits on an elegant throne, in holy conversation with Saints John the Evangelist, Bartholomew, Catherine of Alexandria and Lucy. The solid volumes and perspective reveal the influence of Piero della Francesca and Florentine culture. The lunette with the Flagellation of Christ displays dynamic, well-shaped bodies, reminiscent of the <em>Labours of Hercules<\/em> by Pollaiolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next chapel, there is the tabernacle of the Blessed Sacrament by <em>Bernardo Rossellino<\/em>, with Corinthian pilasters, classical ornamentation and two angels holding the monstrance. Rossellino also created the tabernacle of the holy oils, with the dove of the Holy Spirit in the lunette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the centre of the apse is the wooden choir dating back to 1462, consisting of nineteen stalls made of walnut. The reredos at the back feature Gothic forms with pointed arches and column motifs, while the ones at the front and the large lectern show a Renaissance style, reflecting the harmony between tradition and innovation that characterises the whole building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Altarpiece of the Assumption by <em>Vecchietta<\/em>, a very prestigious artist, is in the left chapel. The signed work brings to mind the architecture of the cathedral\u2019s fa\u00e7ade, with its three-compartment structure and broken tympanum. The Virgin of the Assumption, wrapped in a rich golden cloak, is in the centre, while figures of saints appear on the sides, including Catherine of Siena, canonised by Pius II in 1461.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next is the Virgin Mary and Child with Saints Jerome, Martin, Nicholas and Augustine, also by <em>Matteo di Giovanni<\/em>: Mary&#8217;s throne is decorated with cameos and pink marble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey ends with the Altarpiece by<em> Sano di Pietro<\/em>, where the <em>Virgin Mary<\/em> and Child with Saints Mary Magdalene, Philip, James and Anne are still portrayed in Gothic style. Lacking any true Renaissance spatiality, the richness of the colours and the precious fabrics, like the golden brocade of the throne and the oriental carpet, are particularly admired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
