Pienza is perfect for a leisurely walk among Renaissance corners and views of the Val d’Orcia.
Here’s a suggested walking route through the most characteristic streets, ideal for 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace.
1. Porta al Prato – Village Entrance
Enter through Porta al Prato, one of the main gates of the village.
From here, you immediately begin to feel the Renaissance atmosphere envisioned by Pope Pius II.
Tip: pause for a moment to admire the walls and the view behind you before continuing.
2. Corso Rossellino
Here you will find:
- Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale)
- Borgia Palace (Palazzo Borgia)
- Local shops, especially the famous Pienza pecorino cheese
Stroll slowly and take time to admire the details of the façades.
3. Piazza Pio II - The Renaissance heart
Piazza Pio II is the perfectly proportioned center of the ideal city designed by Pope Pius II.
Facing the square are:**

- Palazzo Piccolomini
It is recommended to visit the hanging garden of Palazzo Piccolomini, offering a spectacular view of the Val d’Orcia.

From the side of the Cathedral, descend towards the most photographed panoramic streets:

Origin of the names
The names are neither medieval nor Renaissance: they were assigned more recently (between the 19th and 20th centuries) to enhance the romantic character of the historic center.
In the 15th century, during the time of Pius II, the streets had functional names or were linked to local families.

This walk is ideal even for those who are not experienced hikers: it allows you to immerse yourself in the nature and silence of the hills, with especially beautiful light and colors at sunset. It is much loved by the residents of Pienza and sees relatively light tourist traffic.
The Church of Santa Caterina
Along the road, you will come across the Church of Santa Caterina, dating back to the late 17th century.
It has a simple brick façade and an interior with a Baroque altar and a fresco of the Madonna and Child. It is a small church that seems to “embrace” the open spaces: from here, one of the most beautiful views of the Val d’Orcia unfolds.
