15 August Ferragosto holiday in Pienza

From 1969 to 2004, Mario Luzi, one of the intellectuals who most characterised the 20th century with his thinking and his artistic work, spent the summer in Pienza, from 15 July to 15 September.

What he loved about his summer destination was the climate, the ideal working conditions, how easy it was to travel to Siena or other locations in the Val d’Orcia, the affection of the people, with whom he interacted with pleasure and great simplicity, and his friendships.

Summer Holidays in Pienza

This is an “important” and significant example that helps understand how rewarding it can be to spend the summer in Pienza, for those very reasons (the climate, the social relations, the opportunity to connect with the community and get involved in initiatives) that made it so dear to the great poet.

Things to do on the 15 August Ferragosto holiday

The main days are those close to Ferragosto, when the town and the surrounding area come alive with two events that have become so classic that they are now identified with the 15 August holiday.

The Concert for the Assumption

We’re talking about the traditional Concert for the Assumption, a classical music and choral performance with operatic singing, normally dignified by the presence of orchestras, choirs and soloists of a high artistic level, which finds its natural setting in Piazza Pio II.

Fireworks in Via Santa Caterina

Let’s also talk about the fireworks that announce the holiday on the night between 14 and 15 August. At around 11.30 pm, the fireworks light up the view, which you can enjoy, from the splendid Via Santa Caterina, in the direction of the Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata. The fireworks are accompanied by festive toasts, which can be enjoyed with delicious tastings of local specialities. The two events are organised by the Pro Loco.
