Pienza is always beautiful. This statement may seem a little cliché and the adjective too generic, but it’s true and has the virtue of simplicity. There is no season and no time of day when Pienza doesn’t display all its harmony and inspire peace, contentment and a sense of balance in every observer.
The “special” beauty of Pienza
Then there is a moment when that beauty seems to explode, forcefully compelling everyone’s attention to focus on it: that moment coincides with “Pienza e i Fiori” (Pienza and Flowers), the event that takes place between late April and mid-May when, every year since 2008, Piazza Pio II is decorated with flowers, forming an elegant Italian-style garden. Conceived by the late Osvaldo Colombini, President of the Pro Loco at that time, Pienza e i Fiori reached its 38th edition in 2025, becoming a true “container” of cultural, artistic, commercial and entertainment events and the discovery of the area, reflecting the widespread passion for flowers and the entire patrimony of plants. The “Dario Formichi” Pro Loco remains at the helm, along with the Centro Commerciale Naturale (Natural Shopping Centre) and with the support of the Municipality.

Piazza Pio II becomes a garden, surrounded by a promotional fair
Along with the colourful displays in the central square, another common thread of “Pienza e i Fiori” is the market-exhibition set up in the public gardens and along the main street, with the participation of exhibitors, nurserymen and accessory manufacturers from all over Italy, along with a consistently large audience seeking flowers and plants to embellish their homes and gardens.
The set-up in the square
Setting up the area involves municipal staff with the support of numerous volunteers. Even this moment is a sight to be seen, as it reveals the care and attention with which the people of Pienza dedicate themselves to even the smallest details, which is the hallmark of the relationship between the residents and the territory. The layout changes every year, drawing inspiration from works of art and their elements; even the fountains thus become opportunities for knowledge and exploration. As for the plants used, petunias of all colours are always present; over 2,000 plants are needed to decorate the spaces and they are patiently arranged by the decorators. The result is always a triumph of harmony and colour.
