War Memorial Plaque in Monticchiello

Near the main monument, on a building that looks out onto Piazza della Vittoria, there are two commemorative marble plaques, dedicated to those who died during the Second World War and the events linked to the Resistance Movement.

1945 Plaque

The first plaque, placed there in 1945, commemorates the citizens who died during the Second World War and in the clashes between partisans and fascist militias. The names engraved on it include partisans and civilians and the inscription celebrates the collective memory and the value of peace.

The inscription reads:

“The walls of this castle that has seen so many battles over the centuries,
on 6 April 1944, with a pure example of the desire for rebirth,
a handful of heroic partisans faced and crushed
the arrogance of the fascist militias.
In their honour and in memory of the fallen,
MARIO MENCATTELLI and MARINO CAPPELLI,
the people of Monticchiello who experienced that day with trepidation,
placed this marble here on 7 October 1945
to honour their dead, victims of common tyrants
who never listened to the voice of the people.”

1947 Plaque

A second plaque, placed above the previous one in 1947, is dedicated to those who died during the Second World War and to the victims of explosive devices. It displays the following names:

PASCUCCI Primo, CARPINI Paolo, VICINI Oreste, MASCI Ivo, CITTADINI Giulio, SEVERINI Arturo, SEVERINI Elide

The inscription ends with a strong civil value:

“May the plaque remind us that peace and love between people is the greatest good.
Year 1947.”

Photographs of the partisans and citizens commemorated are also included on the plaque, an element that reinforces the direct link between historical memory and the local community.

War Memorial – Monticchiello

The monument is located in Piazza della Vittoria, also commonly called Piazza del Monumento, and is a green area halfway along the Via di Mezzo road, in the historic centre of the village.

The obelisk is the village’s main commemorative point of reference and is part of the system of civil remembrance dedicated to those who died in the wars of the twentieth century.
