Church of Misericordia – Pienza

Church of Misericordia – Pienza

The Church of Misericordia, located along the Via delle Mura, is easy to get to on foot from the historic centre and from Pienza’s main squares.

It is an important example of a Tuscan confraternity church, linked to the ancient Confraternite della Misericordia (Brotherhoods of Mercy), lay associations dedicated to charity work and assistance in the town.

The church already existed in the 15th century and has undergone various architectural interventions and alterations over time, while retaining a plain, classical-style façade and a single-nave layout, typical of this type of religious building.

The building includes a bell tower reconstructed in the 19th century and a simple façade, featuring a central opening with a tympanum, which reflects the basic appearance of the Italian confraternity churches in the post-Renaissance period.

Inside the church, there are three baroque-style altars, with decorations and paintings dating back to somewhere between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Among the most important works, there are paintings of St Paschal Baylón, St Aloysius de Gonzaga and one of Our Lady of Mercy, subjects closely linked to the devotion of the confraternities devoted to charity, the protection of the needy and spiritual assistance.

Every year, the church is a place for devotional celebrations, particularly on the occasion of the festivities linked to the Divine Mercy and the local community’s liturgical moments. Despite being small in size, the Church of Misericordia offers a rich patrimony of sacred art and an atmosphere of quiet and intimate prayer. It is often less crowded than the main churches in the village, making it ideal for those seeking a more meditative and silent experience.
