Spedaletto

Spedaletto (or Castle/Grange of Spedaletto) is a fortified historical complex of medieval origin, located in the Val d’Orcia countryside, in the municipality of Pienza, not far from the road connecting Pienza to Bagno Vignoni and San Quirico d’Orcia.

Spedaletto was established in the 12th century as a castle and a spedale (hospital), or a shelter for pilgrims and travellers making their way along the Via Francigena, the ancient thoroughfare connecting Rome to northern Europe. The complex was founded by the cleric Ugolino da Rocchione and by the 13th century it had already become part of the property of the Spedale of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, taking on important agricultural and welfare functions over time.

Due to its strategic location, near the bridge over the Orcia River, it was also known as the “Spedale of the Orcia River Bridge”. Architecturally, it is a fortified complex with a quadrangular layout, featuring corner towers. It was remodelled between the 15th and 16th centuries, also in order to adapt it for defensive purposes, with the addition of embrasures and crenellations.

Throughout its history, Spedaletto was an important stopping point along the routes of the Val d’Orcia and illustrious figures also stayed there, including Charles II of Anjou and Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II. Over the centuries, the structure was expanded and adapted to the typical functions of the grance (granges), which were large fortified farms administered by Sienese hospitals and institutions.

Within the boundary walls, there is a small church dedicated to St Nicholas, consecrated in 1462, which served the religious needs of the community. The church contains medieval artistic treasures, including frescoes and works of art, some of which are now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Pienza.

Today, Spedaletto is excellently preserved and, thanks to several renovation operations, it contains a farmhouse and country retreat accommodation facility. The entire wall structure, the towers and the church can be admired from the outside and, in certain periods, you can participate in visits or stays, which allow you to delve deeper into the history and culture of the Val d’Orcia.

Spedaletto is an example of Tuscan rural medieval architecture, deeply linked to the network of historic pilgrimages and to the economic activities that have shaped the territory for centuries. It is a place that brings scenery, history and memory together, offering an authentic experience in the heart of the Val d’Orcia.
